Architecture, M.Arch.

Master of Architecture
The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) is a NAAB-accredited professional graduate degree that provides the educational credentials required for licensure as a registered architect. https://saet.famu.edu/about/accreditation.php

The program is classified under CIP code 04.0902 (Architectural and Building Sciences/Technology), a field recognized as STEM by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This classification may make eligible graduates qualified for STEM-related benefits, including the STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension for international students, subject to SEVIS and immigration requirements.

The M.Arch. is offered as a two-year pathway for students holding a four-year pre-professional degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited institution, and as a three-and-one-half-year pathway for students without a pre-professional architecture degree.

Message from the Program Director

The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program at FAMU offers an expanded view of architectural practice that integrates research, innovation, and social engagement. Through a curriculum centered on research informed design studios, students are supported in developing architectural positions aligned with their personal, professional, and ethical aspirations. Beyond the classroom, M.Arch. students benefit from close interaction with architectural professionals, national and international guest lectures, and travel-based learning experiences that broaden perspective and deepen design awareness.

The program offers a transformative learning experience that positions architecture as a tool for social justice and cultural awareness, while cultivating environmental responsibility through research driven and performance based design. Students engage questions of spatial justice by examining how architectural decisions shape access, equity, and experience across local, regional, and international contexts.

The curriculum further advances environmental stewardship by emphasizing long term ecological thinking, material responsibility, and climate responsive design strategies. At the same time, it prepares graduates to address complex social and environmental challenges through ethically grounded architectural practice informed by human rights, disciplinary rigor, and professional accountability. Graduates of the program are equipped to shape the future of the built environment through innovative practice, scholarship, and leadership, continuing FAMU’s proud legacy of critical inquiry, resilience, and empathy.

Application and Admission Requirements

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the School of Architecture and Engineering Technology (SAET) receives the completed application materials by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) deadline. While applications submitted after February 1 are still accepted, they are not guaranteed priority consideration for placement or financial aid. Admission is competitive and considered on a space-available basis. Admission decision letters are typically issued by the end of February, and applicants are notified of one of the following outcomes: admission, waitlist, or denial.

The FAMU SGS (https://graduateschool.famu.edu/index.php) manages the Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) application process. The application is online. Applicants must meet the requirements of the SGS as well as those of the SAET. The FAMU School of Graduate Studies’ requirements include the following:

  1. A completed university Graduate Application and payment of the non-refundable fee.
  2. An official up-to-date TRANSCRIPT of undergraduate records sent directly from all previous colleges attended.
  3. A 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative grade point average, covering the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work.

Since architecture is a “Limited Access Program,” the FAMU SAET requirements include the following:

  1. A digital portfolio is required of applicants who have previously studied architecture. Portfolio requirements can be accessed at this link.
  2. A résumé indicating the applicant’s educational and career background,
  3. A letter of intent indicating the applicant’s educational and career goals and reasons for selecting the degree program at FAMU.

There are additional requirements for international applicants. They are TOEFL scores for all non-native English speakers, and Transcripts must be evaluated by a credentialing service such as World Education Services (WES).

Evaluation of Non-Accredited Architecture Degree and Transfer Credits

The evaluation of a non-accredited architecture degree is a structured process that carefully examines an applicant’s prior education to determine how it compares to the content, rigor, and outcomes expected in the FAMU SAET Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS). This process is not designed to confer retroactive accreditation or blanket equivalency. Instead, it focuses on assessing how much of the applicant’s previous academic and design experience aligns with the SAET program. This applies to transfers into the four-year Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies, the professional Bachelor of Architecture, or the Master of Architecture. Additional details are available online (https://saet.famu.edu/about/degreeevaluation.php)

Estimated Program Cost

The estimated program cost is a combination of two calculations: the Cost of Attendance and Specialized Program Costs. Additional details are available online (https://saet.famu.edu/about/estimatedprogramcost.php).

Progress and Retention Requirements

All students seeking admission, provisionally admitted, or fully admitted to a graduate program in the School of Architecture and who are enrolled in upper-division or graduate courses within the School of Architecture are required to meet all the provisions outlined in the university Catalog for satisfactory progress and retention as determined by the School of Graduate Studies and Research. The requirements for satisfactory progress for such students are different from the general requirements for progress and retention for students admitted and enrolled in undergraduate degree programs.

Students provisionally admitted and fully admitted to graduate programs in the School of Architecture who fail to maintain the required conditions for progress and retention could face termination of their graduate student status. A failing grade in a required course or a grade below that required for advancement in the student’s graduate curriculum, as described in the Catalog,
