Bio


Dr. John Luque is Professor in the Institute of Public Health. He teaches graduate courses in public health leadership, social marketing, community-engaged research and practice, and global health. He received his postdoctoral training in Behavioral Oncology in the Department of Health Outcomes & Behavior at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Luque received graduate-level training in applied anthropology and cultural anthropology from Arizona State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in medical anthropology, epidemiology, and social marketing from the University of South Florida. His primary research area is to develop and test community-based interventions to increase preventive cancer screenings, most recently focusing on colorectal cancer. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health. He has held leadership positions with the American Association for Cancer Education and the Society for Medical Anthropology. Overall, he has authored or co-authored over 80 scientific papers and book chapters.

  • Salud es Vida (Health is Life). Cervical Cancer Education Program in Spanish, comprised of a curriculum, flipchart, brochure, and animated DVD. In April 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published Cancer Policy Brief: Preventing and Treating Cancer in Rural America, which features Salud es Vida as a case study.
  • Barbers Against Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer Education Program in English, comprised of a curriculum, flipchart, and brochure. The toolkit was featured in an article about prostate cancer in the June 2008 issue of JET Magazine. Barbers Against Prostate Cancer was also featured as a case study in Chapter 8 of the textbook, Community/Public Health Nursing: Promoting the Health of Populations, 6th Edition, 2015. Mary A.
