Bachelor of Criminal Justice (Online)

About This Program

The Bachelor of Criminal Justice program equips students with the fundamentals of social science research to stimulate their ability to apply social and criminological theory, social science methods, and computer technology to address social and cultural issues related to the criminal justice system.  With an emphasis on law enforcement, criminal procedures, the courts, and corrections, FAMU’s Criminal Justice program has educated and trained students who now serve as law enforcement, correctional and probation officers, while many others have gone on to pursue law degrees and now hold positions in courts, colleges, as well as in public and private practices and agencies across the nation and world.

Degree Requirements

The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice awards the Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree.  To obtain the degree, students must complete 120 semester hours of coursework at both the upper and lower levels including all general education and university requirements with a minimum GPA of 2.0 on a 4.00 scale.

The basic prerequisite for all criminal justice majors is CCJ 2010 Introduction to Criminal Justice, followed by the components of Criminal Justice offerings consisting of theory, research, criminal law, law enforcement, corrections, and juvenile justice. To major in criminal justice, a student must complete thirty (30) credit hours of 3000 level or above courses in criminal justice, including 21 credit hours of core courses and 9 hours in a substantive area.

Students may choose from the following substantive areas: (1) legal studies, (2) minority and gender studies, (3) juvenile justice, or (4) corrections.

Internships are available for students who wish to acquire experience in their chosen professional area and do not plan to do graduate work. The internship is optional, but students are strongly encouraged to arrange their schedules so that they can complete an internship before they graduate.

A minor is required for Criminal Justice majors.  The minor requires eighteen (18) credit hours in an approved discipline. The curriculum for the minor follows the requirements specified by the minor discipline.
