About Me


Dr. Samiri Hernandez Hiraldo is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and the Department of Visual Arts, Humanities, and Theater at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). Before coming to FAMU, Dr. Hernandez Hiraldo taught Anthropology at the University of Puerto Rico, the University of Michigan, and Florida State University.

Dr. Hernandez Hiraldo has published articles, book chapters, reviews, and the book Black Puerto Rican Identity and Religious Experience. She is currently researching the life histories of African Americans in Wakulla County, the Latino religious experience in the Tallahassee area, and the relationship between environmental activism and religion in Puerto Rico. She has also published six collections of ethnographic poetry and collaborated in numerous anthologies and literary journals, some of which are in Spanish, Italian, Greek, Polish, and Slovenian.
