Ms. Bowen's research area includes parental advocacy, school suspension, and juvenile
delinquency. She assisted with the statistical analysis and data management of projects
in collaboration with the Department of Public Instruction for the purpose of evaluating
alternative learning options for long-term suspended or expelled students in North
Carolina.
Ms. Bowen has taught as an Instructor at Savannah State University; while there, she
taught various courses in Juvenile Delinquency/Justice, Criminology, Law Enforcement,
and Drugs & Special Topics. Her research projects included Factors that contribute
to Student Stress at Savannah State University. Ms. Bowen also implemented a certificate
in Corrections for the Criminal Justice Program. Ms. Bowen has worked in the field
as a mentor and behavior specialist at Life Inc., and Triumph in North Carolina designed
to mentor and deal with behavioral modification of juveniles and at-risk youth. She
also was responsible for parental advocacy in the role of implementing strategies
for parents to communicate effectively with their children.
As a researcher, Ms. Bowen’s special interests are School Suspension and Expulsion,
racial disproportionate rates of African American Males, Juvenile Delinquency Causation
among female offenders, and factors that contribute to gangs. Also, current research
on ‘Long Term Impact of ACEs in Youth and Adult Substance Use Populations.'
